A duplex that read as two disconnected flats. One stair, rebuilt, fixed the whole plan.
The brief
The clients had lived in the duplex for three years and still described the upper floor as somewhere they never went. The original stair was enclosed, dark, and sat in the worst possible position.
Our response
We rebuilt the stair as an open run against the north wall and pulled light down through it. With the vertical connection solved, the upper floor became the quiet half of the house, with bedrooms and a reading room, and the lower half took all the entertaining.
